The Man Who Circumcised Jesus  Jesus was just another 8-day-old Jewish boy to him. He did his cutting upon the baby boy marking him as a Son of the Covenant. He handed the babe back to his parents and went on his way having no idea he had touched the firstborn Son of His Majesty in heaven. The circumciser was among the first to handle the Son of God who now rules from the Heavenly Father's throne in heaven. He encountered the sacred, the holy, and he knew it not. A mistake most of us repeat on a daily basis.

If you wish to join AA, the only requirement is that you give up the adrenaline rush of media-fed fantasies." (read more...but doomsdayers beware!)

A Proverb or Psalm to Live By

Today's Pick:

Like a gold ring in a pig's snout,
is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.
Proverbs 11:22

The old line about putting lipstick on a pig can't make it beautiful is similar to this proverb. Nature provides it own beauty to all of God's creation though we may not appreciate it in every case. Big fat pigs are "interesting" to observe, but not beautiful to my eyes. Adding a gold ring to the swine's snout doesn't change a thing. The point of this proverb isn't pig beauty, but what makes a person beautiful or not beautiful.

To try to be beautiful in terms of physical things never succeeds. Without the inner beauty of the soul and character, beauty is simply garnish. A gorgeous women who lacks sense and moral discretion is not really attractive. If the beauty of the person doesn't reach inward the outward beauty becomes simply an object. Attractive women who market their beautiful bodies to the porn industry are not really "beautiful," they are commodities to be used and abused while their beauty holds. The same can be said of the whole physical body obsession of our culture. Get a tight body with abs showing and you will be desirable. Billions are spent to garnish the outside with little attention to the beauty within. Infomercials will sell exercise machines, diet food, and magic wrinkle removing cream (all fighting an ultimately loosing battle), but will never tell you how to become beautiful within. Such spiritual beauty of character does not lend itself to pricing and packaging.

What is real beauty in a person? Some of the most beautiful people I have ever seen are elderly people whose souls shine so brightly their bodies are hardly visible. Their patience, humility, wisdom, kindness, respect and strength of character make them beautiful. And this beauty is not just for old people--and not all old people have developed beauty of character. The natural beauty of the human body is a creation of God. I thank him that he made women attractive to us men. But the flower of physical beauty quickly fades. God's plan is for all humans to be eternally beautiful by taking on the divine character of God himself. He is goodness, tenderness, wisdom, righteousness, justice, and he is filled with loving kindness. He will give each of us such eternal beauty if we but seek it. Jesus is beautiful precisely because he became like his Father. We can too.  --Ken Westby
